When we first saw this house we didn't like the name! We thought perhaps it was named after a person called Shirley! We felt if we bought it we would have to change the name.
However when looking into it we decided that 'Sher' (or alternative spelling 'Cher') as a name was 'dear' or 'favoured one'. 'Sher' as a place is 'clear or bright water' and 'Lea' is well known as a 'meadow' or 'pasture'.
The property has always been known as that and the name appears on some maps. So we decided to keep it, however for our custody of the place we are going to spell it - 'Sher Lea' so the emphasis is on two words rather than it sounding like Shirley, as we have found out some of the locals refer to it!
Sher Lea is just outside Lynton in Devon, on the road to Barnstaple and falls within the Exmoor National Park.
The executors of the then recently deceased lady owner had a hard time selling the place because of this. We nearly gave up on it ourselves but now it is ours and we hope it will make us a happy 'retirement' home!
We longed to live in the country and away from all the hustle of the SE. We were close to the railway, under the Heathrow flight path, stuck in constant traffic jams and surrounded by noisy neighbours! Upgrading to a property we could afford locally would have left us much in the same environment.
1st June 2012
We saw Sher Lea on 1st June 2012 but didn't take possession until November when the holiday we had planned for the summer turned into a rather cold stay, the first week, without any heating oil, we showered under a kettle!
26th September 2013
Having sold our Taplow house (home for over 30 years) we moved in! We missed the summer again but had a really sunny day.
